The perfect finishing touch for your Japan Journey
Japan IT Business Impact
When projects in Japan hit a snag, trust is lost or key clients pull out, local experience is what counts.
However, not every challenge refers to an escalation. Often, it is a matter of winning over key customers, speeding up decision-making or building trust in the long term.
I am involved wherever practical ability to take action needs to be demonstrated in Japan
– for businesses that want to deliver to their Japanese market, no excuses –
– with direct communication, clear lines of responsibility and measurable results –
When things get serious in Japan, your organisation must be able to demonstrate its strength
Many IT providers find themselves under pressure precisely when it matters most. They have excellent products and experienced teams, and have prepared thoroughly for the market. Yet when projects get underway, key clients need to be won over or critical situations need to be resolved, it becomes clear that technical expertise and thorough preparation alone are no longer enough to overcome Japan’s invisible hurdles.
You are a software vendor or provider of complex IT solutions. You will face...

Problems that can only be resolved on-site in Japan
- Head office considers Japan to be ‘well served’, even though customers there are turning away.
- A strategically important project in Japan is in danger of falling through.
- Your partner reports an ‘escalation’, even though internally everything seems to be ‘on track’.
- The requirements are unclear – nobody dares to ask.
- Your management is pushing for progress, but the team in Japan is hesitant: communication is clear, but not binding.

Consequences to be avoided with language & cultural knowledge
- Customers back out at the last minute if they don’t fully understand your IT solution.
- Customers will take their business elsewhere if they do not perceive your company as capable.
- Project delays, rising costs and declining confidence when requirements are not properly understood.
- Your customers – and ultimately your partners – are beginning to doubt your reliability.
- Your good reputation in Japan is at stake – even though your product is a hit.

Case studies from critical situations
My services go beyond the superficial advice offered by others – they are practical, actionable and deliver direct benefits for your IT business in Japan.
A key customer is threatening to withdraw
Situation
A strategically important client lost confidence in the solution. Errors, unresolved issues and uncertainty jeopardised the business relationship.
Challenge
The client was on the verge of canceling the project.
My contribution
I coordinated support between Japan and head office, worked closely with the local team and ensured communication at executive level.
Result
The project was stabilised, confidence was restored and cooperation continued.
Partner loses confidence in your solution
Situation
A partner was having difficulty implementing the solution in client projects. The developers felt uncertain and sales was losing momentum.
Challenge
Without technical confidence, no new projects will get off the ground.
My contribution
A multi-stage enablement programme in Japanese, backed up by experts from head office and with direct practical relevance for the local teams.
Result
The developers gained confidence, the partner became more active, and sales picked up again.
Presentation and negotiation in Japanese requested
Situation
In the tender, a client stipulated that the presentation and negotiations must be conducted entirely in Japanese.
Challenge
An interpreter could have translated the words – but not the technical content, expectations or nuances.
My contribution
I delivered the presentation, facilitated the discussion and handled technical communication directly in Japanese.
Result
The client was pleasantly surprised, the negotiations were successfully concluded and trust was significantly strengthened.
Stalled requirements analysis
Situation
The analysis of a project that had already been won was not making any progress. The requirements were discussed, but not really understood.
Challenge
After two weeks, there was hardly any visible progress.
My contribution
Within a day and a half, I reorganised the results obtained so far, carried out the requirements analysis directly in Japanese and delivered the documentation in English.
Result
The analysis was completed on schedule, no additional translation costs were incurred, and the project was able to go ahead as planned.

Frequently Asked Questions
We're just a medium-sized company. Aren't we far too small?
No. Most of the successful projects I work on do not come from large corporations, but from specialist software companies in the SME sector.
The key to success in Japan lies not so much in the size of the company as in thorough preparation, a compelling offering and a willingness to build up the market over the long term. Specialised software and IT companies, in particular, can be very successful in Japan if they understand the expectations of their customers and partners and consistently meet them.
Japan is not a market for quick wins. However, any company – even a small or medium-sized enterprise – that is prepared to invest for the long term and build reliable relationships stands a very good chance of success.
If you would like to assess whether Japan is currently a good fit for your business, please feel free to use the free ‘Japan IT Business Readiness’ self-assessment.
That sounds like a lot of work. Shouldn't we just skip the idea then?
The real question is not whether Japan means work. The question is whether the expected opportunities justify the effort.
Those who set out without preparation often end up paying the price in more ways than one: through project delays, lost customers or failed partnerships.
Whilst taking a structured approach does take time, it helps you avoid many of the costly mistakes that end up requiring considerably more effort later on.
We have very specific requirements – wouldn’t a bespoke quote work out cheaper?
Not necessarily. The package prices are based on typical real-world scenarios and are calculated to provide a quick and transparent solution for most short-term assignments or clearly defined tasks.
The benefit for you is that you immediately receive a reliable budget estimate and avoid the additional effort involved in drawing up quotations, detailed cost calculations and renegotiations.
If your project differs from the scenarios outlined here or spans a longer period, we will, of course, provide you with a bespoke quote. In such cases, the focus is not on standardisation, but on providing the best possible support for your specific situation.
So, in the end, are we back to ‘Time & Material’ after all?!
No. The key difference compared with traditional time-and-materials models is the ability to plan ahead.
You only commission support when it is actually required. There are no ongoing retainer fees, no unused consultancy days and no long-term commitments. The services are agreed in detail in advance and carried out on the basis of a specific statement of work (SOW).
The package prices are based on assignments on normal working days (Monday to Friday). Brief consultations, preparations or dress rehearsals outside these times are, of course, possible. Extensive additional services will be agreed in advance if required.
Wouldn’t it be easier and cheaper to have an interpreter on site?
An interpreter translates speech. In critical situations, this is often not enough.
Japan IT-Business Impact is designed for situations in which technical, linguistic and cultural misunderstandings give rise to tangible risks and, as a result, high costs: stalled projects, uncertain clients, lost trust or decisions that have reached an impasse.
You’ll receive support from a single source – right where decisions are made. I understand both the technical and business aspects, communicate in Japanese, and translate not just words, but expectations, risks and priorities.
In many cases, your own experts do not need to be on site for support. Before the assignment begins, we agree on what specialist backup is required and when it needs to be available. For long-standing clients, this form of support largely replaces the need to send out their own experts.
Fixed prices including travel costs to Japan – how does that work?
Most assignments in Japan can be reliably costed. That is why our sample costings already include the usual travel and accommodation costs.
For you, this means, above all, peace of mind when it comes to planning: you’ll receive a budget estimate without having to worry about booking flights, hotels or the organisational details of a trip to Japan.
The following principles apply to the calculation:
- Prices for Japan are based on bookings made well in advance and on standard market rates for travel and accommodation. In the case of last-minute bookings or exceptional market conditions, individual adjustments may be necessary.
- For assignments outside the Greater Tokyo, Osaka or Nagoya areas, or in the event of special travel requirements or changes made after the assignment has been confirmed (e.g. on site), additional travel costs within Japan may be incurred. Depending on the terms of your contract with your client, these costs can often be passed on.
- For assignments in Japan, an advance payment of €10,000 is required to cover travel expenses.
However, we always discuss any discrepancies before a binding order is placed, not only during the assignment.
When is Impact the right choice – and when not?
Impact is useful when customers, partners or projects in Japan require specific support – or when important sales opportunities cannot yet be adequately supported by local resources.
However, Impact is no substitute for strategic preparation. If you wish to assess the Japanese market first, understand the risks involved or develop your strategy for Japan, the Japan IT Business Assessment or the Japan IT Business Navigator are usually the better place to start.
Impact is most effective where a solid foundation is already in place and where concrete results now need to be achieved, trust secured or critical situations stabilised.
